People’s Bank of China, uniface obverse and reverse printer’s model/artist’s rendition for an unissued 5 yuan, 1976, brown, group of men and women studying together at centre, title ‘Seven Two Trial Piece’, presumably the title of the project which created this piece, reverse in similar colours, two soliders with rifles on horses with the Tian Shan in the background, (Pick not listed), slabbed by PMG ‘Artist’s Rendition’ without a grade. The history of this piece is similar to the above lot but the artwork is much finer and probably drawn by a different artist. Unique and the only piece of the 1976 series discovered to date.
The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, $100, specimen, fully printed date 6th October (19)10, Grey borders on purple-pink, bank coat of arms at upper centre, ‘$100’ to its left and right, ‘100’ in violet underprint at centre. Black printed Manager signature “Dickson” at lower right, Accountant unsigned at left. Perforated ‘CANCELLED’ multiple times in the lower portion of the note. A rare W.W. Sprague and Co. printing for Hong Kong, (Pick 39 for type), PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (Perforated Cancelled, Previously Mounted). Exceptionally rare and important. The colours brilliant and fresh. Essentially a perfect piece with trace of mounting at the corners. From the Stanley Gibbons discovery set ca.1975. Spink China sold the other known $100 example, without the date and signed “Cochrane” in lesser grade (PMG Extremely Fine 40), for HKD$600,000 (including Buyer’s Premium) in August 2019. The $100 example sold by Spink China one year ago had important differences with the Barrett specimen: In addition to these two subtypes, at the end of the Classics period the Chartered Bank fortuitously retained an example of an issued note. This issued and cancelled example is now in the collection of the Hong Kong Museum of History, and is illustrated by KN Boon. The date of that note is 8th September (19)10, thus a month earlier than the Barrett specimen. Most interestingly, the dates of printing a month apart are unusual for a high denomination such as the $100, and may well have been made due to the change of Manager from “Cochrane” to “Dickson” as seen on the Barrett example. The Hong Kong Museum of History example is serial no. K/X 41083. This rarity is hand-signed at bottom left and with the printed Manager signature of “Dickson” at bottom right. The note bears heavy Cancelled stamps, as well as chops or graffiti, particularly on the back.
The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, $5, 16.2.1863, serial number 6090, Hand-signed by the Bank Manager and Accountant. Stamped “Cancelled” at left and right centre. Exceptionally rare and important. With two original internal memos prepared as a record at the time by the Chartered Bank. The first memo states this note was part of a file of late redemption Chartered Bank notes sent to London from Hong Kong and from Singapore. The file was pulled from the Bank’s London records during a Second World War paper drive. A paper sorter saved these old documents, along with other curiosities that caught her eye such as colourful restaurant menus, and such. In 1995 these five first series Chartered Bank notes were consigned by her (by now) elderly daughter to a London auction house, who must have had the shock of her life when she received the post-sale auction report. *This is the second oldest Chartered Bank issued note issued known for Hong Kong, the earliest being a $10 dated 1st December 1862. It predates by five years the earliest surviving issued note of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation dated 1867, and only one (Chartered) Mercantile note dated 1858 precedes it. *Together with the note is an original document, partly printed and part handwritten, which reads: [Printed:] “Chartered Bank of India, Australia, and China. MEMO. Hong Kong, [Manuscript:] “24th Mar 1881.” [Manuscript:] “$5 Note No. 6090. This note is not marked off the Branch Register as Cancelled, because the space is filled up by the date (19/2/75) of a note returned to London. Unless the correct number of note cancelled on 19/2/75 be obtained the register must remain as it is.” *The second original document reads: [Manuscript:] “Hongkong $5 note, No. 6090, part of 5000 Nos 5000/10,000, shipped 1st Nov 1862. Two other notes of same numbers have been supplied but with prefix letters AM & FS respty.” (Pick 21a), PMG 10 Very Good (Stamp Cancelled). One of only two notes known (the other being dated 1865) and thus ultra rare, as well as of exceptional importance.
